THE BACKSTORY
The watch that takes you back in time...
World War II 1945: A group of Swiss watchmakers are enlisted by the British Ministry of Defense to accomplish one daunting mission: Create a watch that can survive war.
The blueprint is drawn: Water resistance... Shock resistance... Shatterproof crystal... Precise movements... Black dials with Arabic numerals... Railroad minute tracks and sub-seconds dial... Luminous hands and indices....
The Swiss recruits seize the challenge and embark upon building this crucial watch. In the end, it was twelve companies that were able to adequately deliver. Twelve watches that would dutifully make their way to the front lines.
Thus, "The Dirty Dozen" was born.
THE FILTHY 13
The legendary nickname was designated to these watches only years later. Originally the name of a 1967 war movie, "The Dirty Dozen" told of a group of delinquent combatants who would wreak havoc behind enemy lines during the second world war. Rooted in truth, the film dug inspiration from an actual U.S. military unit who- although not actually criminals- were infamous for their grit and blatant disregard for rules and convention. Donning war paint, mohawks, and a staunch rejection of proper hygiene, this unconventional troop succeeded in multiple demolition operations over the course of the war.
Yet there was one small detail the movie title failed to capture about the real life troop: With Private Jake McNiece in command, this unruly squad was in fact a group of thirteen. They were known as none other than
The Filthy 13.
